The settings that actually improve battery life (and the myths)

A handful of settings account for most of the battery you lose in a day, and a surprising number of popular tips do nothing at all. Knowing which is which turns guesswork into a ten-minute fix.

The screen is the largest single cost

On almost every phone and laptop, the display is the biggest consumer of power, and brightness is the biggest variable within it. Dropping from full to roughly half brightness has more effect than any background tweak, and auto-brightness keeps that low when the room allows.

Refresh rate is next. A panel running at 120Hz costs noticeably more than the same panel at 60Hz, which is why adaptive modes exist and why forcing a high rate permanently is expensive. Screen timeout matters too: a 30-second timeout adds up over a day of glances. Background work: refresh, location and push

Background App Refresh on iOS and the battery optimisation controls on Android decide which apps may wake up when you are not using them. Restricting a handful of chatty apps, rather than all of them, gives most of the benefit without breaking notifications you rely on.

Location is the other big one. Choose While Using instead of Always for anything that is not navigation, and turn off Precise Location for weather and shopping apps that only need a rough area. For mail, push is usually cheaper than a frequent fetch schedule, because the server contacts the device once instead of the device polling every fifteen minutes. Weak cellular signal is an underrated drain, so switching a struggling 5G connection to LTE in a bad-coverage area genuinely helps.

What barely matters

Several habits persist despite doing nothing useful, and a few actively cost you.

Reading the battery screens

The Battery pane on iOS shows usage over the last 24 hours and 10 days, splits activity into screen-on and screen-off time, and lists each app's share. An app with heavy screen-off activity is the one to restrict, because it is working while you are not looking.

Android's Battery usage screen reports since the last full charge and separates foreground from background use, with Adaptive Battery learning which apps to limit. Both platforms expose battery health separately, showing maximum capacity as a percentage and offering optimised or limited charging to slow long-term wear. A capacity below roughly 80 percent explains far more sudden drops than any setting will fix.

A ten-minute pass

Work through it in order. Turn on auto-brightness and lower the baseline, set the screen timeout to 30 seconds, switch the refresh rate to adaptive, then open the battery usage list and restrict the two or three apps with the most screen-off activity.

Next, move location permissions down a level, turn off Precise Location where it is not needed, and thin out the alerts that keep waking the screen using the notifications steps. Finish by checking battery health so your expectations match the hardware. Frequently asked questions

Does closing apps save battery?

No. Suspended apps use almost nothing, and force-quitting means the system pays the full launch cost the next time you open them.

Is it bad to charge overnight?

Modern phones pause near full and finish just before you wake, using optimised charging. Enabling that option, or an 80 percent limit if offered, reduces long-term wear.

Does dark mode really extend battery life?

Only on OLED displays, where black pixels are genuinely off. On LCD panels the backlight stays on regardless, so the saving is essentially zero.
