Samsung ships more options than almost anyone else, and the skill is not finding a switch but knowing which of sixteen headings it hides behind. How One UI organises Settings

Sixteen entries is a short list for a phone carrying roughly 354 rows, which tells you the grouping does a lot of work. Connections swallows Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, SIM manager, Mobile networks, Airplane mode, Data usage and tethering, so the top level stays calm while the second level gets crowded. Connected devices is kept separate for the things you own rather than the networks you join. Then Modes and Routines, Sounds and vibration, Notifications and Display cover daily use, and Wallpaper and style plus Lock screen and AOD split appearance in two. Battery and device care merges four maintenance ideas that other systems keep apart.

The character of the list is really in its back half. Advanced features is a genuine miscellany, Digital Wellbeing handles screen time, General management holds language and reset, and Software update and About phone finish in the usual order. That leaves a predictable trap: when a setting is not where you expect, the answer is almost always Advanced features or General management, and knowing which of the two saves a minute every time. Compared with a plain Android build, the same underlying options are here but redistributed, so muscle memory from another handset works only about half the time.

Three settings worth finding

  • Settings > Modes and Routines > Driving

    A mode changes several settings at once when a condition is met, and Driving is the easiest one to reason about. Finding it shows how the phone bundles do-not-disturb, audio and app behaviour into a single state instead of asking you to flip each switch.

  • Settings > Display > Motion smoothness

    This is where the screen refresh rate is chosen, and it is the setting most often blamed for battery drain on a new Galaxy. It sits between Screen mode and Font size and style, which is not where most people think to look.

  • Settings > Connected devices > Quick Share

    Quick Share handles direct file transfer to nearby devices, and it appears twice on this screen, once as the feature and once as its settings. Knowing the distinction avoids the common mistake of turning off visibility when you meant to change who can send.

How this menu got here

Samsung's phone settings began as a dense scrolling list and were reorganised into a smaller set of broad headings with large touch targets in the lower half of the screen, on the argument that a big phone is used one-handed. Later releases pulled scattered automation controls together and gave modes and routines a single home, and moved always-on display beside the lock screen. The two versions offered here, 7 and 6.1, sit either side of that tidying, so switching between them shows what moved rather than what was invented.

Who this is useful for

Someone moving from an iPhone to a Galaxy gets the most immediate value, because the hard part of that switch is vocabulary rather than gestures. Retail staff who demonstrate handsets, carrier support agents reading a path down the phone, and parents setting up a first phone for a child all benefit from rehearsing without holding the device. So does anyone on 6.1 deciding whether the newer release is worth installing.

What is real and what is sample data

The state cannot be. A device name, an address, a build number, a network name, a storage figure, whether a particular switch is on or off — those belong to a physical phone, not to a menu tree. Is this Samsung's own settings app?

Why does my phone show more entries than this?

Carriers and regions add their own items, and some entries only appear when matching hardware or an account is present. The sixteen headings shown here are the common core. If something on your handset is missing from the simulator, that is usually why, and the surrounding structure will still match.
