watchOS vs Wear OS settings, compared

Every smartwatch splits its settings between a tiny screen and a companion phone app. Apple and Google draw that line in noticeably different places.

The split between watch and phone

An Apple Watch has a Settings app on the wrist covering General, Display & Brightness, Sounds & Haptics, Focus, Passcode, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Battery. The Watch app on a paired iPhone mirrors most of that and adds the parts that are painful on a small screen, such as app installation and face arrangement.

Wear OS works the same way in outline, with an on-watch Settings app and a companion on the phone. Which companion you get depends on the hardware: a Google Pixel Watch uses the Google Pixel Watch app, while Samsung devices use Galaxy Wearable.

That is the first real asymmetry. watchOS has one companion app for every model, Wear OS has several. The watchOS vs Wear OS comparison lays out both trees.

Faces and complications

On watchOS you can add and edit a face directly on the watch by pressing and holding the current one, then choosing Edit to swap complications. The iPhone Watch app also carries a Face Gallery, which is the easier way to browse a large collection.

Wear OS uses the same two routes: press and hold the face on the watch to customise it, or use the phone app to browse and install faces. Google's newer Watch Face Format changed how third-party faces are built, so what you can tweak varies by face rather than by watch.

The vocabulary differs slightly too. Apple calls the small data widgets on a face complications; Wear OS uses complications on faces but also has Tiles, which are separate swipeable panels alongside the face.

Notifications and mirroring

Both platforms default to mirroring the phone. On watchOS, the Watch app's Notifications screen lets you keep Mirror my iPhone for most apps and set custom behaviour for Apple's own apps.

Wear OS mirrors phone notifications too, and you can block an app from the watch itself or from the companion app. Because Android already has per-channel notification controls, muting a channel on the phone usually mutes it on the watch as well.

If your wrist is buzzing constantly, the fix is normally upstream on the phone rather than on the watch, which the notifications guide covers.

Workouts, health and battery

watchOS keeps workout preferences in the Workout app settings on the watch, including auto-pause and end-of-workout reminders, while long-term health data lives in the Health app on the iPhone.

Wear OS depends on which health platform the watch ships with. Pixel Watch models route activity data through Fitbit, Samsung watches through Samsung Health, and each supplies its own goals and reminders screens.

Battery modes also diverge. Apple added a system-wide Low Power Mode in watchOS 9 that disables background heart rate readings and the always-on display. Wear OS offers Battery Saver plus vendor extras such as Samsung's watch-only mode. Either way, the always-on display is usually the single largest drain, as the battery life guide explains.

Which is simpler to manage

watchOS is the tidier system because it targets one phone platform and one manufacturer. Any Apple Watch tutorial applies to any Apple Watch of that version.

Wear OS is more flexible and more variable. It works across many Android phones and several watch makers, but menu names and companion apps shift between brands, so generic instructions fail more often.

Both start with the same step, pairing over Bluetooth, which the pairing guide covers. To see the actual menus before you buy, open watchOS and Wear OS in the free browser simulator and scroll through them.

Try it yourself, on the real menusOpen any of 43 operating systems in your browser and walk the Settings tree exactly as it appears on the device. No download, no account.

Frequently asked questions

Can an Apple Watch pair with an Android phone?

No. watchOS requires an iPhone for setup and for the companion Watch app, and there is no supported way to pair it with Android.

Do I need the phone app to change watch settings?

Not for most things. Both platforms expose display, sound, passcode and battery options on the watch itself, but app installation, face libraries and detailed notification rules are easier or only available on the phone.

What is the difference between complications and Tiles?

Complications are small data elements placed on the watch face itself, on both platforms. Tiles are Wear OS panels you swipe to beside the face, and they have no direct watchOS equivalent.
