Xbox Settings: the ten tabs of the Series X|S dashboard
Xbox settings open as a full-screen page with ten tabs down the left and tiles on the right, the same layout the Xbox One introduced. This page walks those tabs as they stand on the August 2026 dashboard, explains what the three updates here change, and links each tab to a screen you can open.

How Xbox organises its Settings
General is the first tab and the busiest: Network settings with the connection tests, Power options, TV & display options for resolution, refresh rate and video modes, Personalization and Online safety & family. Personalization has its own tab too, for the background, colour and Home layout. Account holds the gamertag, sign-in security with passkeys, Game Pass, payment and family settings, and Privacy & online safety.
Devices & connections pairs controllers and sets button mapping and vibration, and covers the Blu-ray drive and remote features. Preferences is the grab-bag: game captures, language and location, Startup & shutdown, notifications and Game Bar. System carries Updates, Storage devices, Console info and Backup & transfer. Ease of Access has Narrator, Magnifier, high contrast, game transcription and controller options. Profile & system, Captures & shares and Closed captioning close the list.
What changes between versions
Three releases are here, named by year and month the way the dashboard names its updates. 2311 and 2405 are the late-2023 and mid-2024 dashboards, sharing an OS build in the 10.0.25398 line. 2608, the August 2026 update, moves to the 10.0.26100 build that also underlies Windows 11, and the Updates page under System reports it. The ten tabs are the same across all three; what the rail shows is the build behind them.
Three settings worth knowing the path to
- Settings > General > TV & display options
Resolution, refresh rate, the 4K and HDR video modes and the TV calibration tool. It is inside General rather than a tab of its own, which is why new owners search for it.
- Settings > Preferences > Startup & shutdown
Sleep versus Energy-saving, the setting that decides whether the console updates overnight and whether remote play can wake it. Power options under General covers the same choice.
- Settings > Devices & connections > Button mapping
Remaps any controller button system-wide, including swapping the sticks. It lives under the controller entry, three rows into the tab.
